Safe Shores: A Pathway to Hope and Healing Since 1995
In January 1995, the future became brighter for children and families affected by abuse in DC. Believing that DC could do much better in responding to and protecting children, three very smart and determined women – Patricia A. Riley, Esq., Lavdena Orr, M.D. and the Hon. Administrative Judge Arlene Robinson (deceased) – found their paths crossing far too often at child death reviews, They moved from frustration to action. As a result of their leadership, the children’s advocacy center (CAC) model was adopted in the Nation’s Capital.
In 1995, Safe Shores was officially established as an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving child victims of sexual abuse and their families. In 2002, the DC Council formally recognized the CAC and mandated a multi-agency response for cases involving child victims of sexual and physical abuse.
Safe Shores provides survivor-centered intervention, hope, and healing for children and families affected by abuse, trauma, and violence in the District of Columbia, and works to prevent and end child abuse and neglect through promising practices, policies, and partnerships.
As the only children’s advocacy center in DC, Safe Shores serves as the hub of a multidisciplinary team united in a mission to provide comprehensive, coordinated, compassionate services to children and families.
