How to Respond to a Disclosure of Child Abuse
- Remain calm. While your feelings are completely valid, reacting strongly may cause the child to feel shame and guilt and shut down.
- Believe the child and assure them what happened is not their fault.
- Ask as few questions as possible. It is not your responsibility to investigate.
- Protect the child by ensuring they are not near the abuser.
- Immediately contact DC’s Child and Family Services hotline at 202-671-7233 to be connected to the proper authorities.
Learn the Signs of Child Sexual Abuse

Find Help for DC Teens
When sexual assault happens in DC, 13-to-17-year-olds have the legal right to a victim advocate. Teens can request an advocate, also known as a Youth Advocacy Specialist, on their own by calling or texting the DC Victim Hotline at 844-443-5732 or using the online chat.
